Creative Writing

My memoir essay entitled Marriage Lessons from my Turkish Grandmother was published online in Granta 115: The ‘F’ Word, the feminism issue (online edition, June 2011). I have written two award-winning radio plays, broadcast on the LBC (London Broadcasting Company) and performed on the West End (see below). I am currently working on a family memoir. My agent is Peter Bernstein (New York).

Books

As an editorial assistant and amanuensis to the writer Ved Mehta at The New Yorker, I worked on two of his memoirs, Dark Harbor (Nation Books, 2003) and All for Love (Granta Books, 2001).

Plays

I have also written two award-winning plays, both of which were broadcast on the LBC (London Broadcasting Company) and performed on the West End in London. My first radio play, Echoes in the Park (1993), about three stages in a young woman's life, was written when I was 17 in my final year at Harrogate Ladies’ College. It won the Woolwich Young Radio Playwrights' Competition, and was broadcast on the LBC. I was presented the award by Melyvn Bragg. Adapted into a stage play, it was performed at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden, London (directed by Gerard Murphy of the RSC and starring Fuschia Kate Sumner). It won Most Original Script at the Harrogate Theatre Competitive Festival of Drama (1994), and was runner-up in Best New Writing at the Cuppers Drama competition at Oxford University (1994). My second radio play, All for the Best (1998), a sci-fi dystopian romance, also won the Woolwich Young Radio Playwrights' Competition, was broadcast on the LBC, and was performed at the Criterion Theatre, London. The radio version starred Beth Goddard and Dan Mersh.

I translated two plays by one of Turkey's leading playwrights, Özen Yula: In Trust in the Near East and That’s How it Starts (Turkish to English).
